Phoenix, AZ: Hazardous To Your Beauty

I am sure most Phoenicians doomed to an eternity down below are looking forward to the cooler temperatures. Everyone says it’s more tolerable because it’s a ‘dry heat’ but when it’s 120, wet or dry, it’s miserable.

It’s been wreaking serious havoc on my skin, hair, hands and feet and hands. Walking around in Phoenix is pretty much like putting yourself in a fully-blasting furnace, and it is slowly sucks every bit of water and hydration from you.

Not a good look.

I am looking and feeling like Gollum from the Lord of the Rings (also not a good look).

My skin and hair are completely parched, and I have even lost a couple of locs because they are becoming brittle. My face looks like and oil slick, trying to overcompensate for the extra drynees in the air.

My fingernails are brittle as well, and let’s not even discuss my feet. Let;’s just say I am doing the world a favor by keep my feet in my sneakers.

So now I am putting myself through a beauty boot camp of sorts, doing weekly intensive treaments in all areas:

Skin: I am on the Clear Skin Regimen that can be found at Acne.Org . I use Neutrogena products (love ‘em) — specifically the Oil-Free products with salicylic acid. I use the cloths to wash and the moisturizers. I also use the Neutrogena On-The-Spot acne treatment for the benzyol peroxide. My skin is well on the road to recovery now. I highly suggest the regimen, especially those of you who suffer from moderate hormonal or adult acne.

I have also cut back on wearing makeup (even though I loive my MAC), as that seems to exacerbate the skin issues going on — not to mention the lovely hormonal flare-ups I get during my period.

Nails: I am giving myself weekly manicures and twice daily using a nd nail strengthening creme by Sally Hansen, and also buffing my nails nightly to encourage circulation and growth. The digits are looking better, but they still have a bit to go…

Hair: My locs are probably the biuggest problem I have right now. When we lived in North Carolina, they looked great. The humidity is very high there, and the moisture in the air kept my hair soft (skin and nails, too)> Now my hair is soooo brittle. But wih locs, you can’t put too much product on them or you could risk build up. Too much water left on too long could result in mildew — so what is a sistah to do? I have been washing more often, but my hair still looks and feels very dry and I just lost another loc last night!

I am thinking some serious research at Nappturality is in order this weekend. The sistahs there are nappy hair pros, and will be able to give me advice on this. If they don’t start looking better soon, I am seriously considering cutting them and starting over!!!  I have a funny shaped head, so that would definitely NOT be a good look.

I am going to be in Beauty Boot Camp for about 3 months, and I expect to graduate with divalicious honors!
